Soil matrixes are arguably the most challenging medium to treat. To develop treatment strategies for physical, chemical, biological, and thermal techniques, RECON has developed a 1,500 square foot Treatability Center in Houston, Texas. The center is used to develop and optimize treatment strategies using known and innovative treatment techniques. RECON also conducts bench-scale studies to develop solutions for industrial waste and by-product applications.
As an example, when designing and optimizing a means of stabilizing an organic sludge, RECON will first analyze the waste material to utilize any inherent beneficial chemical properties associated with the waste material. Second, a survey is done of commercially available reagents within the region. The data from these initial steps becomes the basis for a mix design that will yield an engineered product to meet the performance criteria specified by our clients. These performance criteria can include permeability, strength, leachability, or pH.
