A telescopic boom lift has been rented to transport workers to vacuum carbon out of water filtration units.  These units must be decontaminated prior to returning them to vendor.  Operators were given a class on proper operation of the boom lift when it was dropped off.  Two operators on site have been deemed competent by site Superintendent and Site Safety.  Cleaning of the filtration system requires employees to be a maximum of 10 ft off of ground.

Things to remember when operating boom lift are:

hights•         Perform inspection of lift, harness, and retractable lanyard.  Note the findings on daily inspection logs.
•         Always wear snug fitting harness with retractable lanyard attached to D–ring hook.
•         Ensure gate is closed on man basket whenever inside of basket.
•         Employees should familiarize themselves with the controls and note location of red emergency shut of button.
•         Always park lift on level ground before elevating.
•         Have spotters on ground guide movement and watch for potential collision hazards.

One of the KEY´s to SAFETY is good COMMUNICATION. Don´t take it for granted that your co–worker knows you´re there.  Call out on the radio and get an answer before entering their safety space. Make good eye contact with your co–worker seeing you and waving you on. It only takes one second to create a life time mistake.

Safety Planning Ahead Helps Productivity

Safety planning ahead, Remedial Construction Services, L.P. (RECON)Sometimes you can we plan ahead to prevent that hidden danger that sneaks up and bites you.  It is when you do not have the luxury of knowing what / where that hidden danger is when we perform a HAZARD HUNT.  Take the time to ask your client for any drawing / history of the area / facility. Sometimes it´s good to just listen to an old timer that may know the area / facility, but always expect something is there.
