Stephen A. Berry, CFPS, STSC, is Corporate Director of Health and Safety for Remedial Construction Services, L.P. (RECON), an environmental remediation and geotechnical construction company based in Houston, Texas.
As Corporate Director of Health and Safety, Mr. Berry oversees the development and steering of RECON’s corporate behavior-based safety (BBS) program. He is responsible for the training of employees on RECON’s BBS program, safety policies, procedures, and regulations in conjunction with Regional Safety Managers and leading the corporate health and safety steering committee, which makes decisions regarding safety procedures, safety initiatives, projects, and tasks affecting company operations. In addition to his role, Mr. Berry also verifies compliance with health and safety regulations and ensures that all necessary records are maintained and prepared according to established guidelines and manages OSHA inspections and provides inspectors with appropriate documents and identifies safety measures. Under Mr. Berry’s leadership, RECON has completed over 1.8 million man-hours without a recordable, and as a result, RECON has completed two years in a row without an OSHA Recordable injury (2014 and 2015).
Mr. Berry has over 26 years of experience in health and safety planning, specializing in oversight, training development, and implementation.
Since joining RECON in 2010, Mr. Berry has held positions as a Site Safety Officer and Regional Health and Safety Manager. Prior to joining RECON, Mr. Berry held health and safety positions for Weston Solutions and held numerous positions in Preble County, Ohio, including: Captain, Training Officer (Fire Division), Radiological Officer, and Firefighter/Engineer. Mr. Berry has over 50 health and safety related certifications, including Certified Fire Protection Specialist and Safety Trained Supervisor – Construction.
Mr. Berry graduated from the University of Cincinnati with a Bachelor of Science in Fire and Safety Engineering Technology. Mr. Berry served in the U.S. Navy as an Electronics Technician and Operator of a Naval Nuclear Propulsion Plant.
