OUT-OF-PLAIN-VIEW OBSERVATIONS

It is fairly easy to walk through a work area and take a quick look at the obvious, in-plain-view items and find potential hazards. However, many hazards are behind closed doors or electrical panel doors, in drawers and toolboxes, behind and under desks and cabinets, above us and below us (think underground and above ground utilities!), inside of a pipe line (unexpected pressure!) and otherwise just not in plain sight. Working surfaces may not be structurally sound, guardrails and walls may not support the intended load, other people may walk under a grating or pipe chaise and be exposed to dropped objects, a weather pattern may develop on the other side of the tanks or towers and an exit door may hide a restricted means of egress on the other side of that door.

A Field Test for Your Hard Hat

A Remedial Construction Services, (RECON) employee or supervisor should use this test to determine possible degradation of polyethylene shells.

Compress the shell inward from the sides about 1 inch (2.5 cm) with both hands and then release the pressure without dropping the shell. The shell should quickly return to its original shape, exhibiting elasticity. Compare the elasticity of the sample with that of a new shell. If the sample does not exhibit elasticity similar to that of a new shell or if it cracks due to brittleness, it should be replaced immediately.

OFFICE SAFETY

You may think that since you work in an office you don't have to worry about being injured. However, offices can become dangerous because people don't anticipate the potential hazards.
Studies show that over one-fourth of office injuries are caused by falls. Other things that can cause falls are spills on floors, torn carpets or exposed carpet seams, electrical cords running across the floor, open desk or file drawers, boxes or supplies stored in aisles, or waste baskets placed where you could trip over them. Look around to see if you can spot any of these potential problems. If you find any, take the time to get them fixed.

CELL PHONE USAGE

Studies suggest that cognitive impairment may distract drivers for up to two minutes after a cell phone conversation. Additionally, new studies completed in 2011 show that using a cell phone while driving is actually equivalent to being 4 times over the legal alcohol limit in most states.
Remedial Construction Services, (RECON) has a no cell phone usage policy while operating company equipment, let's ensure it is followed and enforced.
